Parks, Plants and People: Beautifying the Urban Landscape by Lynden B. Miller

Wednesday, May 10, 12 – 2 pm, Luncheon, Lecture and Book Signing $45, Parks, Plants and People Book $38, The Hartford Golf Club

Renowned public garden designer Lynden B. Miller will present an inspirational lecture—based on 30 years of experience designing urban green space in New York City—showing that public spaces with good year-round plantings can change city life by providing a connection with nature for neighborhoods rich and poor.

Public space must be designed for the needs of the people who will use them. She will show the “befores” and “afters” of various projects around the city, how they are funded, and what effects they have had on city life in New York. Well-designed and well-maintained parks also contribute to economic growth in surrounding neighborhoods, providing tax benefits, encouraging tourism, and reducing crime.

After restoring the Conservatory Garden in Central Park beginning in 1982, Mrs. Miller has designed many public gardens and parks in New York City as well as gardens at the New York Botanical Garden and several university campuses.  As a painter and garden designer, Mrs. Miller brings an artistic perspective to garden design.  She has written a book about all this, Parks, Plants and People: Beautifying the Urban Landscape, which will be available for purchase and which Mrs. Miller will be glad to sign.
