Civic Projects – Spicebush Swamp Park Work Session
April 27 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
What we’re planting:
- 13 mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) shrubs — picked up from the North Central Conservation District Earth Day Native Plant Sale. We’ll install these opposite the Bird Sanctuary Garden, where we’ve removed many invasives.
- 19 native trees — from the West Hartford Tree Project (our order plus a few extras they generously offered):
- 1 White pine (Pinus strobus)
- 2 Sycamores (Platanus occidentalis)
- 2 American hazelnuts (Corylus americana)
- 7 Swamp white oaks (Quercus bicolor)
- 4 Sweet birches (Betula lenta)
Important safety note
There is poison ivy in the mountain laurel planting area. I’ll bring poison ivy wipes (pre- and post-exposure), and bleach wipes to clean tools, but please dress accordingly.
What to wear / bring
- Long sleeves, long pants, gloves (tuck pants into socks if you can)
- Boots are recommended (some areas are swampy)
- Sun hat + sunscreen; insect repellent (I’ll bring extras)
- Spade/shovel if you have one
If time permits
After planting, we may pull garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) if it’s budding/blooming.
We’d love your help—please reply if you think you can make it
