Connecticut Valley Garden Club – Spring Fling Fundraiser @ Hartford Golf Club

Featuring Kent Russell, who will entertain us with colorful design ideas.  He will have a wide variety of plants, familiar and different, for you to add to your collections. This will be an evening filled with fun, laughter, good food, drinks, and friends. It is an opportunity to continue to embrace Spring! Maybe you will be the successful bidder on a variety of gardening, pampering and entertaining opportunities.

Due to Covid, we cannot go into Plant Housing to do the workshop but will continue to bring the donated (discarded) flowers from Whole Foods, Blue Back Square.

Contact Chuck or Justin 860-523-8500 at Whole Foods 3 days prior to save flowers with our name WH Garden Club. Contact Gary Bagdashian, the manager, at 860-462-7368 at Plant Housing that you will be bringing the flowers on that Wednesday.  Pick up flowers at the flower kiosk between 10 am and 2 pm. and deliver to Plant Housing.

Field Trip @ Sleepy Cat Farm

Please sign up for the West Hartford Garden Club Field Trip to Sleepy Cat Farm, Greenwich, CT, scheduled for Thursday, May 12, rain date May 19. See details below. We currently have 24 people signed up!

We are very excited for the Field Trip to Sleepy Cat Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut. This trip is an all-day trip, leaving at 8 am and returning around 6:30 pm. The trip is not handicap accessible, as the land can be rocky at the Farm. Masks must be worn on the bus and proof of vaccination is required to get on the bus. The cost of the trip is $89 and includes the bus ride, Sleepy Cat Farm, lunch, and tip to the bus driver. The trip has a maximum of 40 people. After April 10, we will open the trip to non-members, if it has not sold out. The bus will stop mid-way both ways to stretch and have a bathroom break. The day is planned out to have the tour, go to lunch at The Spotted Horse Tavern in Westport and visit the wonder shop of Terrain in Westport before heading back to West Hartford.

The bus will be leaving from the commuter lot across from Target by Route 9 at 8 am. Please call Billie Reese (860 841-2457) or Charlotte Massie (860 280-6802) if you have additional questions. Masks must be worn on the bus and proof of vaccination is required to get on the bus.

  1. Sign up and mail your check to Billie Reese at 82 Foxridge Road, West Hartford. Make your check out to “Friendship Tours” for $89. Your place on the bus will not be reserved until we have your check.
  2. Let me know what lunch you would like – the choices are Hamburger, Salmon Avocado Wrap or a Cobb Salad. Lunch will come with a drink and a dessert.

“The World of Peonies” with Dan Furman

The World of Peonies covers basic botany and cultivation history of the various types of peonies—tree, herbaceous and intersectional—in China, Japan, and the U.S. The talk also includes propagation and cultivation how to, as well as ideas on using peonies in the landscape.

Dan Furman is co-owner of Cricket Hill Garden, a second-generation specialty nursery and forest farm in Thomaston, CT. Since joining the business in 2010, he has worked to expand the peony production program at the nursery, as well as diversify the stock grown to include unusual landscape and forest edibles.

If you can’t join us Thursday, not to worry. Dan’s talk will be recorded and the video link will be sent to all members the week after the meeting. This is just one of the many features of membership – we thank you for supporting our efforts.
