Description

WHPL has teamed up with the West Hartford Garden Club to create a seed library at the Noah Webster Library! Join us March 18 from 10am-11:30am on the main level of the Noah Webster Library to pick up free seeds for your garden, consult with Master Gardeners to get all your garden questions answered, and enter a raffle for a chance to win flower pots filled with gardening supplies.

Can’t make it to the event? No problem – the seed library is accessible beginning March 18 during library hours on the main floor of the Noah Webster Library beneath the staircase to the mezzanine.

The seed library is sponsored by West Hartford Public Library and the West Hartford Garden Club. Special thanks to Ocean State Job Lot in Bloomfield for their generous contributions to the collection.

FGCCT – Springtime in Charleston
Mar 22 @ 8:00 am
We are going to Charleston!

Join the Federated Garden Clubs of Ct. as we return to the Lowcountry
this time to Charleston, South Carolina, the jewel of the antebellum
south. We will experience the charm and hospitality of iconic Charleston
when we visit the historic homes such as the HeywardWashington
House, the Nathaniel Russell House, Magnolia Gardens & Middleton
Place as well as a walking tour to Mrs. Whaley’s Garden and a peak into
private gardens during the walk. There will be delightful dinners to
remember and a special Southern buffet lunch at Middleton Place.

The highlight of the trip will be The Garden Club of Charleston’s 86th
Annual Garden Tour, where we will have an inside look at private
gardens in Charleston. At the same time of our visit, the Historic
Charleston Foundation is having the 76th Annual Festival of Houses and
Gardens and we are enjoying their Friday luncheon & lecture. Don’t miss
this one!

Civic Projects – Invasive Plant Removal Party CANCELED @ Spice Bush Swamp Park
Mar 25 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

CANCELED DUE TO THE WEATHER BEING RAINY AND COLD.  THIS WILL BE RESCHEDUED AT A LATER DATE.

If you are interested, please text, email, or call Beth Ann so that she can plan accordingly. She will have handouts, and guided instruction will be provided. Many of you joined us last year, so you will need only a little review. More information will follow soon about best attire, gear to bring, and more.

As you know, invasive plants are non-native species that spread aggressively in natural areas. Invasive plants have replaced native species in many different habitats in Connecticut. When native plants are displaced in the landscape, the diversity of native birds, insects, other animals, and plants may be decreased and ecosystem functions may suffer.

On the new date, we will focus on cutting Oriental Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) (or pull if it is small), and Multiflora Rose (Rosa multiflora) to the soil level. We will pull Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata).

We have two more invasive plant removal parties on the calendar for July 15, 2023 and November 4, 2023, also from 9 am – 12 noon.
