Nature into Art: Lessons from the Gardens of Wave Hill by Thomas
Christopher | Lecture, Lunch & Book Signing

One of the last surviving estates in the five boroughs of New York, Wave Hill has developed over the last half-century into one of the foremost public gardens in the United States. Join author Thomas Christopher for a photographic tour of the Wave Hill gardens, and share in the many lessons these have to teach about designing and maintaining a more beautiful landscape.

Wave Hill, a world-renowned public garden in the Bronx, boasts a classic horticultural craftsmanship unrivaled among other public gardens in the United States. But it also embraces a design spirit that is daring and innovative. Every year brings changes to Wave Hill: new combinations of colors, textures, and forms, along with creative themes and constant experimentation. Nature into Art brings this splendid, sensory experience home by honoring the unsurpassed beauty of Wave Hill. It explores the different areas of the garden – the flower garden, the shade border, the wild garden, the conservatory, and more – and gives gardeners helpful information on the plants, techniques, and design choices that define this iconic space. Filled with stunning, ethereal photography by Ngoc Minh Ngo, Nature into Art will enchant and inspire you to practice the Wave Hill way of gardening.

Thomas Christopher is a graduate of the New York Botanical Garden School of Professional Horticulture and has been designing and maintaining gardens for more than four decades. A former contributing editor to Martha Stewart Living magazine, he is the author of more than a dozen books about gardening, most recently Nature into Art: The Gardens of Wave Hill. He also produces a weekly podcast, “Growing Greener,” a series of interviews with leaders of environmentally-informed gardening that is dedicated to making your landscape healthier, more sustainable, more beautiful, and more fun. His weekly column, “Be A Better Gardener,” circulates to more than 25 regional publications in southern and central New England with a total readership of 250,000. Thomas gardens in central Connecticut and the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts.

Russ will also include a few details regarding some native edible plants he has grown successfully from seed, and the partnerships he has made with conservation groups and others to add edible native plants to their landscapes.
