Annual Herb Symposium 2024 | Sensational Scented Geraniums

The Connecticut Unit of The Herb Society of America’s Annual Herb Symposium is designed to educate and inspire everyone to incorporate herbs into their daily lives.

The Connecticut Unit’s first annual herb symposium took place in 1985 and traveled around the state until settling at the Pond House Cafe Garden Room in Elizabeth Park in 2003. This program is designed to educate and inspire everyone to incorporate herbs into their daily lives. Attendees enjoy an herb-infused morning snack and a delicious lunch prepared by the Pond House, featuring herbs chosen by the guest speaker. Browsing the herbal boutique and strolling through the many gardens in Elizabeth Park round out a perfect day!

Keynote Speaker – Sal Gilbertie

A leading expert in herbs, Sal Gilbertie is the president of Gilbertie’s Herb Gardens, Inc., of Westport and Easton, Connecticut, where he resides. A USDA Certified Organic herb and vegetable supplier to garden centers across the country, his business has been a family affair for three generations.  Established in 1922 by Sal’s grandfather, Sal, his wife, Marie, and his four children are involved in its operation today. Sal is the author of several books, Herbs for the Holidays, Home Gardening at Its Best, and Kitchen Herbs, which received an International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) award. Sal has appeared on many television and radio shows, including Martha Stewart Living, Home Matters on the Discovery Channel, and the Home Show on the Lifetime Channel.

Gardening School, Course 1, Series 9, September 11 – 12, 2024

Gardening Schools provide current information to those interested in horticulture and related topics. The curriculum has been developed by National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC), and is customized by the course instructors. Classes are open to the public as well as garden club members. Garden club members who complete the series of four courses (and pass the exams) are certified as NGC Gardening Consultants.

The courses, which may be taken in any order, are structured to stimulate interest and impart knowledge for growing plants to the peak of perfection. Course content, which is presented in lecture format over the first two days by horticultural professionals, may include tours of botanical and test gardens. Topics include the study of basic botany for gardeners, soils, houseplants, and propagation. Also covered are such topics as how new plants are developed and evaluated, factors that influence plant growth, container gardening, pruning techniques, growing outdoor flowers and vegetables, specialized styles of gardening, growing plants indoors and/or under lights, and growing trees and shrubs, plus other interesting and informative gardening topics.

Field Trip – Enders Island, Mystic, CT @ St. Edmund's Retreat Center

The Field Trip Committee is planning on an outing to the St. Edmund’s Retreat Center on Enders Island, Mystic, CT, on Thursday September 12, to see the 2,000 Dahlia sanctuary on 11 acres along the shore. This was the home of Dr. Thomas and Alys Enders who gifted the home and land in 1954. Rain date will be Friday September 13.

We will have a guided tour (beginning at 11 am) followed by box lunch of cranberry salad wrap, cape cod potato chips, pickle, chocolate chip cookie and water bottle to enjoy around the property at various tables and chairs or on a rock by the water. They have seating to accommodate 30 people around the gardens.

Indicate when submitting check if you have any dietary restrictions. They can accommodate most restrictions. Car pooling will be coordinated so please indicate when signing up if you are willing to drive others and if you do NOT require carpooling. Final count will be taken on September 3rd.
