Lucky for us, he decided to become a mystery writer and one of his most popular series is “The Garden Club Gang.” His books are filled with intrigue and humor. We are in for a treat. Nature into Art: Lessons from the Gardens of Wave Hill by Thomas

One of the last surviving estates in the five boroughs of New York, Wave Hill has developed over the last half-century into one of the foremost public gardens in the United States. Join author Thomas Christopher for a photographic tour of the Wave Hill gardens, and share in the many lessons these have to teach about designing and maintaining a more beautiful landscape.
Thomas Christopher is a graduate of the New York Botanical Garden School of Professional Horticulture and has been designing and maintaining gardens for more than four decades. A former contributing editor to Martha Stewart Living magazine, he is the author of more than a dozen books about gardening, most recently Nature into Art: The Gardens of Wave Hill. He also produces a weekly podcast, “Growing Greener,” a series of interviews with leaders of environmentally-informed gardening that is dedicated to making your landscape healthier, more sustainable, more beautiful, and more fun. His weekly column, “Be A Better Gardener,” circulates to more than 25 regional publications in southern and central New England with a total readership of 250,000. Thomas gardens in central Connecticut and the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts.

Join us Thursday! “Nibbling on Natives in your Back Yard and Beyond”
PLEASE NOTE: RUSS WILL JOIN US VIRTUALLY AT THE SYNAGOGUE, AS HE IS RECOVERING FROM COVID. Russ Cohen Thursday, April 20, at 7:30 pm on Zoom – or join us in person at the Emanuel Synagogue (160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford) at 7 pm FREE for members, $10 non member donation Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten, for a 60-minute slide show featuring at least two dozen species of native edible wild plants suitable for adding to your own landscape, or nibbling on as you encounter them in other locales. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided, along with edible portions, seasons of availability and preparation methods, along with guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging. Russ will also include a few details regarding some native edible plants he has grown successfully from seed, and the partnerships he has made with conservation groups and others to add edible native plants to their landscapes.

The West Hartford Garden Club will have a table at the Earth Day Celebration this Saturday from 11 am – 1 pm at the Town Hall. Your Civic Projects team is coordinating our participation. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 9 am – 12 noon for an invasive plants removal party with your Civic Projects Committee. If you are interested, please text, email, or call Beth Ann so that she can plan accordingly. She will have handouts, and guided instruction will be provided. Many of you joined us last year, so you will need only a little review. More information will follow soon about best attire, gear to bring, and more.
As you know, invasive plants are non-native species that spread aggressively in natural areas. Invasive plants have replaced native species in many different habitats in Connecticut. When native plants are displaced in the landscape, the diversity of native birds, insects, other animals, and plants may be decreased and ecosystem functions may suffer.
We have two more invasive plants removal parties on the calendar for July 15, 2023 and November 4, 2023, from 9 am – 12 noon.
A collaboration with the WH Garden Club. Held rain or shine and correct time, locations TBD around town and information will be available soon.
Please plan to give us at least one hour of your time during the morning. Please bring your favorite tools for weeding and pruning. A co-chair will arrive at the garden by 8:30 a.m.
PARKING: Parking will be in the paved lot next to the Amos Bull House on South Prospect Street. We encourage you to carpool as space is limited.
We plan to work if the rain is light. If it is pouring, you will get a cancellation call by 8:00 a.m.
