173 Mountain Road
West Hartford
CT
You are invited to join us on October 24 at noon to 3 pm for an invasive plant educational walk and removal party at Spice Bush Swamp Park, 173 Mountain Road, West Hartford, CT. We will stress identification and low-impact removal techniques. If you are interested, please email, text, or call me so that I can plan accordingly. I will have handouts and offer helpful information to all, with guided instruction. THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR CT MASTER GARDENER COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS.
Warning: the terrain is uneven and soggy in places, making it a poor choice for individuals who have mobility difficulties.
Plan to park in the small lot on Mountain Road, or across Mountain Road on Glocester Lane. Please plan to arrive by 9 am for instructions. Caution: Mountain Road is a busy roadway, so please exercise caution if crossing the street.
Our group has been meeting most weeks on Monday afternoons, and has had success using low-impact removal techniques, relying heavily on cutting invasives to the soil level to prevent photosynthesis and exhaust roots. We are restoring this park by removing the tenacious invasive plants that have damaged the site and have worked to install native plants in their place wherever possible. Invasive Porcelainberry (Ampelopsis Brevipedunculata), Common Buckthorn (Rhamnus Cathartica), Oriental Bittersweet (Celastrus Orbiculatus), Multiflora Rose (Rosa Multiflora), Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera Japonica) are current targets.
Hope you can join us. Thank you!
